On the 5th of January, the â€œGlÃ¶cklerâ€ walk from one door to another in the Salzkammergut. This is proper pagan-action and very odd. They are young men dressed up in white trousers and dress with large crest-hat decorations that are lit up from the inside. The â€œGlÃ¶cklerâ€ have bells on their belts and joints and perform dances. This was traditionally done to wake the seed in the soil and natureâ€²s spirits. I canâ€²t think of a justification the Catholic Church might have found for continuing with it, but here it is and has quiet a long tradition that most have never heard of in the States. This may be the basis for the traditional carol singers that visit welcoming homes during Christmas Eve.
