Victorian Opposition leader John Pesutto says “kids should be in school” ahead of the planned student strike for Palestine in Melbourne on Thursday where organisers have called for students to walk out of schools at lunchtime.
The rally has been organised in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East.
Victoria’s Department of Education sent out updated advice to schools advising them not to turn a blind eye to students walking out of classrooms on Tuesday.
“We want our kids in school and it would be far better in my view if students right across our state … along with their parents and staff, want to discuss these issues,” Mr Pesutto said.
“I think it is far better for students, parents and staff to sit down and talk about these issues in a constructive way in their classrooms.
“We are going through a period of time when we are seeing anti-Semitic acts and sentiments on the rise.
“Many people in Victoria’s Jewish community feel under siege at the moment, and protests like this … are adding to that anxiety that many people in our Jewish community are starting to feel.”
