Chapter 19 War With Poland

On March 19, 1939, U.S. Ambassador to France Bulli? informed the Poles both he and FDR were counting on Polish willingness to go to war over Danzig if necessary, and that FDR was prepared to do everything possible to promote a war between the British and French against Germany. Halifax, meanwhile, was a?empting to create a broad anti-German front and an encirclement of Germany by proposing an alliance to include Britain, France, Poland, and the USSR. The Poles distrusted the Soviets as much as they did the Germans, and backed away from any such agreement that would bind Poland to the USSR. Both Halifax and FDR began to vigorously encourage the Poles to refuse to accept the German demands regarding Danzig. Bulli? finally told the Poles he regarded an alliance between Britain, France, and Poland, without the USSR, to be the best possible arrangement. He said British leaders hoped there would be a war between Germany and the USSR, and they were not eager to make commitments to the USSR for that reason. The USSR was also becoming ever more distrustful of Britain and France.
