The camp was, in fact, a large prison. Inmates were mostly political prisoners, but they also included conventional criminals such as severe repeat offenders, prostitutes, beggars, the homeless, addicts, and others regarded as anti-social by the Reich. (Ibid., p. 9). The media image of Dachau as a place where only Jews were interned is therefore completely untrue, as the official guide points out: Originally designed to hold 6,000 prisoners, the prison camp grew in size after the war started, as prisoners were used in the surrounding factories for forced labor. At the same time, political opponents arrested in countries occupied by the Reich were also sent to Dachau. In this way, at least 40,000 Poles, 25,000 Russians, 21,000 Hungarians, 21,000 Frenchmen, and even around 9,000 Italians were detained at one stage or another in Dachau. By 1940, the number of prisoners in the camp had reached 10,000, and it was severely overcrowded. To deal with this, a network of 140 subcamps was established, all set up to provide labor to the surrounding industries. By 1944, two large subcomplexes of Dachau concentration camp, in Mühldorf and Landsberg, had been created, where prisoners were employed to build enormous bunkers that were to house production facilities for fighter planes. By this stage of the war, deportations coming back from the East, prompted by the advance of the Soviet Army, pushed the population of Dachau to around 30,000 by April 1945. The severe overcrowding, combined with Allied bombing that cut off regular supplies, and, ironically, a resultant shortage of Zyklon B, led to a lice infestation at the camp. This resulted in an outbreak of typhus, and the death toll from this debilitating disease increased dramatically. On April 29, 1945, the U.S. Army occupied Dachau and freed all the prisoners. The Western media was allowed into the camp and, just as had been the case with Bergen-Belsen (see the following chapter in this book), they were able to photograph gruesome-looking piles of emaciated bodies. These images were presented to the world—and still are—as “dead Jews gassed by Nazis.” The fact that most of these unfortunate victims were not Jews and had died from typhus—a disease that had spun out of control primarily because the Germans could not obtain regular supplies of lice-exterminating Zyklon B due to Allied bombing—was, and still is, overlooked by the Holocaust Storytellers. (The US Seventh Army’s report clarifies that the shocking images of emaciated bodies, now synonymous with Dachau, did not originate from Dachau. They were typhus victims being evacuated to Dachau.) About 9,000 Poles, 2500 Jews (No division of religions listed).
