KULT News reporter, Mike Norton, grew up in Visalia, CA in the 1970s and came back to town for his first time since 1980 to do some First Amendment auditing in his home town.

This resulted in FIVE CALLS TO POLICE in one afternoon.

Would the responding officers recognize and respect our First Amendment right to film in public or would they disappoint us as so many law enforcement officers have before them?

Laws may vary but, generally speaking, in the United States, if you are in public you are legally able to photograph whatever you can see. Simply put, your eyes can’t be trespassed. Obviously there are some restrictions on this (i.e., bathrooms, dressing rooms, most courtrooms, locker rooms, etc.) but very few when you are in public. If you can see it, you can shoot it (this rule only applies to cameras.) This is not legal advice.
