Meanwhile, back on Earth:
Gateshead has the largest ultra Orthodox Jewish community outside of London and the number of incidents of anti-Semitism are rising
Stabbing threats against school children and a Jewish woman being egged are among the slew of anti-Semitic hate crimes in Gateshead - a shocking new report has revealed.
The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors anti-Semitism in the UK, recorded 1,309 anti-Semitic incidents nationwide during 2016, a 36% increase from the 960 incidents recorded in 2015.
This is the highest total since the CST started recording incidents in 1984, beating the previous high of 1,182 in 2014.
In Gateshead, which has the largest ultra Orthodox Jewish community outside of London, the number of reports of anti-Semitism jumped from three in 2015 to 16 last year.
This includes an incident in May outside a Jewish school, where a man shouted towards a security guard: “I will stab you and the Jew children.”
And in June, an egg was thrown at a visibly Jewish woman from a moving vehicle.
David Delew, CST chief executive, said: “Whilst Jewish life in this country remains overwhelmingly positive, this heightened level of anti-Semitism is deeply worrying and it appears to be getting worse. Worst of all is that, for various reasons, some people clearly feel more confident to express their anti-Semitism publicly than they did in the past.
“CST will continue to support the victims of this hatred and we call on others to join us in confronting it wherever it appears.”
The CST say there is no obvious single cause for the rise but claimed a perceived increase in racism and xenophobia following the EU referendum could be partly to blame.
The 1,309 anti-Semitic incidents recorded in 2016 included 107 violent assaults, an increase of 29% from the 87 violent incidents recorded in 2015.
None of these violent incidents were classified by CST as ‘extreme violence’, which would mean they involved potential grievous bodily harm or threat to life.
The report also revealed:
There were 65 incidents of damage & desecration of Jewish property in 2016
1,006 incidents of abusive behaviour, including verbal abuse, anti-Semitic graffiti, anti-Semitic abuse via social media and one-off cases of hate mail
100 direct anti-Semitic threats and 15 cases of mass-mailed anti-Semitic leaflets or emails. The totals for abusive behaviour and threats are the highest CST has ever recorded in those categories.
Describing anti-Semitism as ‘a deplorable form of hatred’, Home Secretary Amber Rudd MP said: “It is vital we ensure the safety and security of our Jewish community and this Government will continue to do all we can to stamp out these vile attacks and encourage those who experience them to come forward.”
