Meanwhile, the Bank of England boss has confirmed it would be ending its emergency measures of buying government debt - known as bonds or gilts - to protect the UK's financial stability and pensions.. This caused the pound to plunge to 1.09 against the dollar but it recovered slightly later in the day.
