March 23, 1933: Adolf Hitler gave a speech in the Reichstag urging passage of the Enabling Act, claiming it was necessary to restore order, overcome economic crises, and strengthen Germany. He framed the law as temporary and legal but threatened consequences for opposition. The Social Democrats, led by Otto Wels, were the only party to openly oppose it, defending democracy, freedom, and parliamentary authority, while other parties either supported it or were intimidated into silence.
