Kleist's 1`st Panzer Army advancе on the Caucasus

It was formed as the 1st Tank Group on November 16, 1940 in the 10th Military District, Hamburg. The units used came from the 22nd Motorized Corps, also known as the Kleist Group. In April 1941 he took part in the hostilities against Yugoslavia. Prior to Operation Barbarossa, she was assigned to Army Group South. He took part in the battles near Uman and Kiev. On October 1, 1941, the formation was renamed the 1st Panzer Army. In November he crossed the Mius River and led the unsuccessful offensive against Rostov. He defended the Mius River line until July 1942. He was then assigned to Army Group A to take part in Operation Edelweiss, part of the Battle of the Caucasus. He broke through the Don basin and reached Maikop. He took part in the fighting at Terek before withdrawing from the central Caucasus.
