Historical Background The Baghdad Railway project began in the late 19th century, with the Ottoman Empire granting a German firm the concession to extend the existing Anatolian Railway from Istanbul to Baghdad. Construction officially started in 1903, with the goal of creating a direct rail link to the Persian Gulf, which would facilitate trade and military logistics for Germany.
