Albert Speer's Light Show at Nuremberg
Albert Speer's "Cathedral of Light" was a grand spectacle at the Nuremberg rallies, designed to showcase the power and grandeur of the Nazi regime. The show featured 152 anti-aircraft searchlights aimed skyward, creating a series of vertical bars that surrounded the audience. This innovative design was a temporary measure until a permanent stadium could be completed, but it became a permanent feature of the rallies. The searchlights were borrowed from the Luftwaffe, which caused some concern from its commander, Hermann Göring, but Hitler overruled him, suggesting it was a useful piece of disinformation. The effect was described as "both solemn and beautiful... like being in a cathedral of ice" by the British Ambassador to Germany, Sir Neville Henderson. The "Cathedral of Light" was documented in the Nazi propaganda film "Festliches Nürnberg" released in 1937.
