Auschwitz came under Austrian rule and became a prime location for Jewish traders working between Russia, Prussia and Austria. In the wake of WWI. Galacia (which included Auschwitz] was given to the newly formed Republic of Poland, In 1939, it was annexed back into the Greater German Reich. At that time, of a
population of 12,000, over half were Jewish. The next largest group was Rorna (gypsies).
