China’s leader Xi Jinping will visit Russian president Vladimir Putin next week, a sign of deepening ties between the two countries as Moscow finds itself increasingly isolated on the international stage and Beijing, keen to assert its position as a major global power and loath to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, styles itself as a neutral arbiter of peace.
