Over 300 ostriches were culled in British Columbia due to an avian flu outbreak, sparking significant public outcry and legal battles. Background of the Cull: In November 2025, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) executed a cull of approximately 300 to 330 ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, British Columbia. This drastic measure was taken after two ostriches tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus, which had previously led to the death of 69 birds on the farm. The cull was ordered to prevent the potential spread of the virus and protect other bird populations.
