LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The man accused of hitting a family with his car and shooting four people in Delta Township on Friday has been ordered to undergo a competency evaluation.
A 3-year-old girl was killed in the shooting, while three adults — the child’s 33-year-old mother, 36-year-old father and a 72-year-old woman who tried to intervene — were hospitalized, according to court documents obtained Tuesday by News 10.
Alexander Lamar Banks, Jr., is facing 10 charges, including one count of first-degree premeditated murder and three counts of assault with intent to murder. He is also facing six weapons-related charges.
Banks was arraigned virtually in Eaton County 56A District Court on Tuesday. He remains held without bond, “because there has been a petition and a proposed order filed for competency,” Hon. Adrianne Van Langevelde, a 56A District Court Judge, said.
and is expected to be back in court in late April after undergoing the competency evaluation.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday, the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls of “an active shooter” near Green Meadows Drive and Farmstead Lane in Delta Township. Authorities said a family was out for a walk in the area when Banks Jr. allegedly struck the family, got out, and began firing shots.
A bystander who tried to intervene was also attacked and suffered serious injuries, according to the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office.
Police have reviewed doorbell footage from a neighbor’s home that shows Banks in a gray sedan intentionally driving into the family before getting out with a 12-gauge shotgun and opening fire, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The document says Banks was seen running from the car and taking the shotgun out of a backpack. He then returned to the backpack and reloaded the gun and began firing again.
He also began punching the girl’s parents and grabbed the mother by her hair “and began pulling it as if he was trying to break her neck,” according to the affidavit.
Banks then allegedly hit the 72-year-old woman with a shotgun, according to the documents. A sheriff’s deputy found a 12-gauge shotgun in the front yard and multiple spent shotgun shells were found at the scene.
