Der Film beruht auf der gleichnamigen Romanvorlage des russischen Schriftstellers Jewgenij Samjatin. Sein Roman "Wir" entstand 1920, und wurde seit 1924 weltweit veröffentlicht, in der Sowjetunion durfte er allerdings nicht erscheinen.

Der 1982 ausgestrahlte Fernsehfilm von Vojtech Jasny wurde vom ZDF bis heute (Stand Dezember 2013) nicht mehr wiederholt und ist auch noch nicht auf Video oder DVD erhältlich. Der Film selbst ist als gelungen zu bezeichnen. Zwar ist die optische Umsetzung der Romanvorlage (aus heutiger Sicht) nicht perfekt. Die negative Utopie, die im Roman geschildert wird, wird jedoch nachvollziehbar dargestellt. Eine kleine Filmperle, die eine Wiederentdeckung wert wäre.
