A shocking security breach has rocked the Mount Vernon Police Department after a Bronx man allegedly smuggled a handgun into a prisoner transport van and shot another inmate.

According to officials, 32-year-old Louis Soto was arrested on Wednesday for forcible touching. During his transfer with four other prisoners to the Westchester County Jail, a gunshot rang out in the back of the van — striking one inmate in the leg.

Police say Soto had hidden a .22-caliber handgun that somehow went undetected during the search process. The injured inmate was taken to Jacobi Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mount Vernon Police Acting Commissioner Marcel Olifiers called the incident “extremely serious,” adding that a full internal investigation is underway. The two officers assigned to the transport have been placed on desk duty.

This comes two years after the department reduced strip searches following a civil rights settlement with the Biden administration. Officials now say magnetometer wands will be mandatory for all future prisoner searches.

Retired NYPD Detective Phil Grimaldi described the situation as “extremely dangerous,” warning that such failures erode public trust in law enforcement.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation.
