Moved to Frankfurt, Germany, January 1989: My time in Frankfurt, lasting only some 18 months, was probably the most influential in my life. I made a friend -- Johann Erich Schneider (where is he today?) -- who gave me a book by Paul Rassinier ("Was ist Wahrheit?", German edition of "Le véritable procés Eichmann"), which opened my mind to doubt the indubitable. A few months later, I read Armin Mohler's book "Der Nasenring", in which he mentions the "Leuchter Report" -- the first-ever forensic investigation of the German wartime camps at Auschwitz and Majdanek. Mohler even provided an address where one could order the German edition. A few weeks after that, the publisher of the German edition -- Udo Walendy -- informed me that it had just been banned and confiscated by the German government. That act of blatantly unconstitutional censorship enraged me and stiffened my resolve to get to the bottom of this. Walendy also told me where I could get an English edition: From British historian David Irving -- which I promptly ordered. Irving's high-gloss edition of the Leuchter Report. with Irving's endorsing preface, breached the dam that had held me back until then. I sat down in my little study apartment in Frankfurt-Nied, dictionary in hand, and translated the whole thing into German to make sure I understand it all correctly. While I found flaws in Leuchter's report, even if only half of what was claimed was true, it was still devastating for the established Auschwitz and Majdanek narratives. In late 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. Patriotism and the smell of a new era swept through Germany. Revisionism, with Leuchter's findings front and center, were the talk of the day in conservative, patriotic and libertarian circles. The dawning of a new age, or so I deluded myself...
Moved to Stuttgart, Germany November 2005: This was an involuntary move: I was deported from the United States on November 14, arriving at Frankfurt Airport the next morning, where two friendly German police officers took me into custody. That afternoon, two other officers transferred me first to Rottenburg prison. A couple weeks later, they realized that this was a mistake, as I was supposed to be in pre-trial detention (jail), not in prison. So they sent me to Stuttgart-Stammheim instead. There, I first of all had to serve a 14-month prison term imposed in 1995 for forensic research I had conducted on Auschwitz (science and research are not free in Germany). I had avoided serving this sentence for almost ten years by moving abroad. Furthermore, I had to await further criminal charges for 9 other books I had published while residing in the UK and the US. Although this activity was perfectly legal there, legality is NOT a defense in Germany.
