Many of us know that Ireland was occupied by the Anglo-British Empire for close to 800 years, but... where did it begin? Was it always solely a conflict between the British and Irish, or were other forces at play? Similarly: did the European nobility's endless squabbling and inter-dynastic war have to do only with European in-fighting, or were there powerful financial backers constantly manipulating things from behind the scenes? In this first part in a series on some of the less-talked about parts of European history: we begin with a look at Ireland around the time of the Anglo-Norman Invasion, and use that as a lens to delve deeper into neglected aspects of European history more generally.
