time for good behavior, something very few people know. This demonstrates the reality of what the work camp system was all about: reform, not torture and repression. The devastation in Dachau and other camps came about at the end of the war as a result not of a mass extermination policy by the Germans but, because of a lack of food and medical supplies, the spread of typhus, and breakdown in sanitation caused by saturation bombing by the British and Americans, which destroyed the highways and railroad system.
